General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania (MAL)

General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania (MAL) is the only university-type higher education institution in Lithuania with the main purpose and mission to train and educate well-rounded, critically-thinking and self-sufficient officers. High-quality officer training and education is ensured by effective and well-combined university and military studies based on modern teaching methods, scientific researches and highest competences of lecturers, military instructors and other academic staff.

The MAL has four academic departments (Department of Political Science, Department of Strategic Management, Department of Humanities and Department of Defence Technologies), focused on teaching and research, and the Research Center. Researches are aimed at national security and defence, management, military sociology, leadership and military history. In cooperation with foreign partners, the MAL implements Horizon 2020 and other important research projects for the Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of Lithuania and other social partners.

The MAL runs 3 undergraduate (Bachelor) study programmes (International Relations, Management of Defence Technologies, National Security and Defence), 3 graduate (Master) study programmes (Military Diplomacy, Defence Studies and Defence Resource Management) and 1 postgraduate (PhD) study programme together with partnering institutions.

The MAL publishes two scientific journals indexed in the Scopus database: Lithuanian Annual Strategic Review and Journal of Security and Sustainability Issues.

Giedrius Česnakas, PhD is an associate professor and member of the Studies and Research Management Group at the MAL. He received PhD in Political Science from Vytautas Magnus University. His doctoral dissertation Energy Resources in Russia’s Foreign Policy towards Belarus and Ukraine (2000–2012) was awarded by the Research Council of Lithuania for the best research in the fields of social and humanitarian sciences in 2014.

The focus of current research is changes in the contemporary world order and defence of small states. He leads the research programme Lithuania in the Global Context: Security and Defence Policy Dilemmas. Giedrius Česnakas contributes to national discussions on national security and foreign policy both with governmental and non-governmental institutions and participates in the preparation of national security documents.
