The Institute for Conflict, Cooperation and Security (ICCS) at the University of Birmingham promotes a multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional approach to global security challenges. It draws on research expertise in the fields of International Relations, Security Studies, Psychology (including Neuroscience), Global Ethics, and War Studies to address issues of conflict and cooperation relating to nuclear trust-building, global nuclear order, mediation and conflict transformation, and the military and civilian uses of drones.

Within the ICCS, the Political Settlements Research Group brings together scholars from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, theoretical persuasions, and methodological approaches with a shared interest in studying the origins, nature, and impact of political settlements in fragile and conflict-affected states around the globe. Our engagement with settlement processes are both academic and practical, and we advance scholarly knowledge and understanding and actively contribute to public debates and policy discussions on and in settlement contexts, including with regard to the structure of negotiations and mediation processes, the design of settlements, and the sequencing and resourcing of implementation efforts.

Stefan Wolff is Professor of International Security at the University of Birmingham in the UK. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute in London and a member of the Advisory Council of the European Centre for Minority Issues. Wolff is an expert on international crisis management and post-conflict state-building and has been engaged in various stages of conflict settlement negotiations, including in Moldova, Iraq, Sudan and Yemen. Among his 18 books to date are Ethnic Conflict: A Global Perspective (Oxford University Press 2007), Conflict Management in Divided Societies (Routledge 2011), and The European Union as a Global Conflict Manager (Routledge 2012). He has also published over 50 journal articles and book chapters, and regularly writes commissioned policy reports for various governments and international organizations. Wolff is a graduate of the University of Leipzig, and he holds an M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
