Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip)

The oiip – Austrian Institute for International Affairs is an independent research institute founded in 1978 and committed to fundamental research in the field of international politics. The oiip is Austria’s leading institute in international politics at the intersections of academic and policy-oriented research. The Institute’s researchers are active in academic publishing, teaching, policy consultancy and public engagement.

We implement research projects, publish scientific reports, academic papers, as well as working papers and policy briefs providing in-depth analysis of current topics and recommendations for policy-makers.

Our objective is to communicate our research results most effectively to the broadest possible audience. We provide research-based consultancy and briefings to decision-makers in governmental as well as non-governmental organizations for a result-oriented exchange and transfer of knowledge and ideas. Our experts respond to media inquiries and offer relevant background information and analysis. Saskia Stachowitsch is the Scientific Director of the oiip as well as Professor of International Relations at the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna.

She previously held the positions of Affiliated Scholar at the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and Visiting Post-doctoral Fellow at the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies at the University of Bristol. She was an Erwin-Schrödinger- and Elise-Richter-Fellow of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and is a member of the Austrian Academy of Science (Young Academy).

She is the author of Gender Ideologies and Military Labor Markets in the US (Routledge, 2012) and her research was published in Critical Studies on Security Security Dialogue, International Relations, Men & Masculinities, Globalizations, International Feminist Journal of Politics, among others.

Her research interests are critical security and military studies, feminist and postcolonial theories in international relations, privatization of security, gender and security, military gender, and EU border security.
