The Asan Institute for Policy Studies

The Asan Institute for Policy Studies is an independent, non-partisan think tank with the mandate to undertake policy-relevant research to foster domestic, regional, and international environments conducive to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, as well as Korean reunification.

The Asan Institute for Policy Studies was founded by Dr. Chung Mong Joon, honorary chairman and a seven-term member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, on February 11, 2008. The Asan Institute conducts research in national security and foreign policy, area studies, public opinion and domestic politics, social science methodology, and global governance.

The Asan Plenum is an annual gathering of the world’s leading think tanks and academics held by the Asan Institute for Policy Studies to discuss the pressing challenges facing the world. The Plenum is a multi-day, multi-session conference. By fostering intensive conversations among top experts about major challenges in world politics, the Asan Plenum aims to positively influence the policymaking process and enable the global community to better address those challenges.

In 2013, the Asan Institute has also launched a bi-monthly journal(both online and hard copy), The Asan Forum (www.theasanforum.org), for in-depth interpretation of rapid changes across the Asia-Pacific region. The Asan Forum aims to bring together scholars and policy experts from across the region and disciplines. The aim is not simply to seek diversity of views; it is to harness the intellectual synergy created when perspectives compete, and more importantly, complement each other. We named it a Forum because it is about exchanging insights and finding the best practices for the challenges that our region faces.

The Asan Academy, a partnered initiative between the Asan Institute for Policy Studies and the Asan Nanum Foundation, aims to foster the next generation of Korean leaders. Each year, sixty individuals are selected as Asan Young Fellows to participate in a ten-month long program of rigorous training and overseas internship. The Academy covers all financial expenses for a unique program that includes comprehensive liberal arts training fusing Western and Eastern approaches, international exposure at leading institutions in either Washington, D.C. or Beijing, and the communal experience of shared living and volunteering.
