Diplomatic Academy of Vienna

The Diplomatic Academy of Vienna (DA) is a postgraduate professional school, dedicated to preparing talented university and college graduates for international careers. Together with Georgetown University, the DA is a founding member of the International Forum for Diplomatic Training (IFDT). It is also an associate member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA).

The DA is one of the oldest institutions of its kind. In 1754, Empress Maria Theresia founded the Oriental Academy, which trained young men for the diplomatic service of the Habsburg monarchy. Out of the Oriental Academy evolved first the Consular Academy and in 1964 the Diplomatic Academy. In 1996, the Diplomatic Academy was granted the status of an independent public training institution.

The DA offers three postgraduate programmes: Diploma Course, Master of Advanced International Studies (MAIS), and Master of Science in Environmental Technology and International Affairs (ETIA). All programmes are distinctly multi-disciplinary, instructing students in Political Science and International Relations, International and EU Law, Economics, and History. Furthermore, we put great emphasis on language training. In addition to our postgraduate programmes, the Academy also runs executive programmes for diplomats from all over the world.

Furthermore, the DA is a research institution and a diplomatic forum. Its faculty members publish their research in top-tier journals and publishing houses. High-profile speaking events and panel discussions address the many facets of today’s bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. With the OSCE headquarters located in Vienna, the OSCE features prominently in our research and events. It also features prominently in our teaching and training.

Professor Markus Kornprobst, M.A., Ph.D., holds the Chair of Political Science and International Relations at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. He previously taught at the School of Public Policy at University College London and Magdalen College at Oxford University. He held research fellowships at the Mershon Center at the Ohio State University, and the Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford University. His research interests encompass International Peace and Security; International Relations Theory; Governance and Diplomacy; Nuclear Non-proliferation; Crisis Management; European Politics; African Politics; Methodology; Diplomacy and Communication. His research appears in leading journals in the discipline such as International Organization, European Journal of International Relations, International Studies Review, Review of International Studies, and Millennium. He is the author of Irredentism in European Politics (Cambridge University Press), co-author of Understanding International Diplomacy (Routledge, with Corneliu Bjola), as well as co-editor of Arguing Global Governance (Routledge, with Corneliu Bjola) and Metaphors of Globalization (Palgrave, with Nisha Shah, Vincent Pouliot, Ruben Zaiotti).
